About 50 % of heart attack in India occur under 50 years of age, 25% occur under 40 years: Dr Harsimranjit Singh

Patiala, December 5: During a press conference here on Friday, Park Hospital Patiala team including Dr Harsimranjit Singh senior consultant cardiology, Dr Arshdeep Singh consultant cardiology, Dr Sidharth Garg consultant CTVS, Dr Arjun Pratap Joshi consultant cardiac anesthesia and Dr Brahm Praksah vice president medical operations announced the completion of 200 successful cardiac surgeries at Park Hospital Patiala. With this Park has now become a centre of excellence in cardiac sciences, team said. PARK Hospitals is North India’s biggest super specialty hospital network with 19 hospitals, 3500 beds, 800 ICU beds, 14 cath labs, 45 modular OTs and over 1000 doctors.

Dr Sidharth also shared that minimally invasive cardiac surgery & robotic surgery are going to be the future of cardiac surgery.

Dr Harsimranjit Singh senior consultant cardiology said,” In India, around 30 million people suffer from coronary artery disease and around 27 % of deaths in India are caused by cardiovascular diseases . The country will soon have the highest number of cases of cardiovascular disease in the world,” Dr Harsimranjit Singh further said,“India tops world in heart attacks among youngsters. The average age of people with heart ailments is coming down and these days we are getting patients at young age of 25 years courtesy sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy habits.

Dr Arshdeep Singh consultant cardiology said, “The heart ailments have replaced communicable diseases as the biggest killer in the country.” According to recent data, approximately 30 percent of the urban population and 15 percent of the population living in rural areas suffer from high blood pressure and heart attacks. As the risk factors of heart ailments increase, so does the mortality rate, said Dr Arjun Pratap Joshi consultant cardiac anesthesia.

Dr Brahm Praksah vice president medical operations said that “Patients with type 2 Diabetes have 2 -3 time higher risk of heart problem as compared to general population. There are currently 100 million people with diabetes in India, and this number is expected to increase to 135 million by 2035.

The current scenario demands that immediate emphasis be laid on preventive healthcare. This involves raising awareness about the disease and its risk factors. Conducting public education programs, workshops and counseling sessions for creating awareness at a mass level, he said.

Col Rajul Sharma, CEO Park Hospital Patiala said that 27 % of deaths in India are caused by cardiovascular diseases every year, as such we need to make a conscious effort to sensitize people about these diseases, the right course of treatment and preventive measures that will help them deal with cardiac problems.
